Codecs FAQ. Windows Media Player includes some of the most popular codecs, like MP3, Windows Media Audio, and Windows Media Video. However, it doesn't include the codecs required for Blu‑ray Disc files, FLAC files, or FLV files.

MPEG, WMA, AAC, FLAC, ALAC, AMR, and Dolby Digital audio codecs: Enable the playback of digital audio content, such as MP3, WMA, MPEG-2 audio, AAC audio, FLAC and ALAC audio, and AC-3 audio. VC-1, MPEG-4, and H.264, H.265, and H.263 codec s: Collectively known as "Standards-based codec components."

Note: Commonly supported formats include MP3, WAV, WMA, AVI, and WMV. Check for outdated or corrupted codecs: You may have a missing or outdated codec. For more information, check file format and codec requirements.

To manually troubleshoot or upgrade your installation of the Player, try the following: Click the Start button, type features, and then select Turn Windows features on or off. Expand Media Features and see whether the Windows Media Player check box is selected. If it is, clear the check box. Click OK and then restart your PC.

To install the Media Feature Pack, navigate to Settings > Apps > Apps and Features > Optional Features > Add a Feature and find the Media Feature Pack in the list of available Optional Features.
